The spring equinox takes place on March 20, at 4:44 A.M. PDT. This is probably the most important astronomical and astrological date of year. The position and condition of the planets on this day are believed to carry their significance over the next twelve months. Many ancient cultures paid close attention to this phenomena.
Mercury opposes Saturn and is reflective of our collective fears regarding the economy and the overall state of affairs. Sure enough, locally here in Vancouver we have already walked the plank with no way back to the safety of the ship. Homelessness and the winter Olympics are just a couple of topics we can go on about at length, never mind the all out gang war taking place in the streets. Everything is serious and all things are scrutinized. In a nut shell we have big work to do.
The world economy has seen its worst shake up in half a century. Mercury sits close to Uranus at the time of the equinox and is a harbinger of good news and innovations. That’s the key to the times folks. Life is taking its twists and turns and we must adapt and make do with what is offered. We may discover that there are myriad ways for us to create new experiences and livelihoods in accordance with the times. We cannot move backwards; we can only move towards the future. As a symbol of the times, a dear old friend stopped by for a chat the other day and we carried on about some of the ideas we had in order to accommodate the present day reality. I knew from this conversation that his family and mine would never do without, not while we’re alive. We will survive and we will no doubt streamline and sustain, as will the rest our culture and society. It truly is an exciting time and it will not let up for many generations to come. I wish that I could be around for the exciting changes destined to occur over the next 50 years. Please remember that we are not human beings having spiritual experiences, but spiritual beings having human experiences.

Presently Venus is retrograding in Aries allowing you the time to revamp, refresh and beautify your existence. As an example I have Venus in Aries. Aries rules the head and face, while Venus rules the lower jaw. In the last two weeks I have had four teeth extracted, lower jaw of course. In the midst of this activity my glasses broke and now I have new teeth and new glasses and I’m smack in the middle of painting and restoring my home. Somehow and some way you should be following along the same lines. Make ready for a very lively spring season.
The time has come to put the past away and get on with the act and art of creating happiness and harmony. Yes spring is close and you may be restless as you struggle with what stays and what goes. By the way, the grass is not greener in the other side of the fence. It is the same grass and tastes no better. What I mean is that we don’t get to move on to the next thing until the karma we’re dealing with now has been worked out. This is a time in which the past may figure strongly anyway, as in a love from the past coming into the picture. It’s all good.
Life takes on certain intensity and much depends on how you handle yourself when the cards are on the table. Emotions come bubbling to the surface which is always distasteful to your average Gemini. Communications hit a glitch and a domino effect takes place especially on March 17 and 18. Honesty, patience and compassion get you through. At times even great wealth could be a hindrance rather than a blessing. The gods are in a mood to be generous with you if you get it right. Work towards the light.

“May you live in interesting times” is a well known ancient curse. We are undoubtedly living in interesting times and it’s difficult to say just how things will turn out. In many recent columns I have carried on about the Saturn – Uranus opposition dominating the skies until September 2010. Saturn and Uranus could not be in more divergent positions, nor be more opposite in opinion, style, philosophy and ideology. Somehow we must translate, assimilate and accommodate their teachings in order to exist in a somewhat cohesive, healthy society. Not only are Saturn and Uranus totally different in their expression, they are visiting Virgo and Pisces and these two signs are opposite to one another and totally different in their respective takes on reality. Conservation, deprivation, starvation and impoverishment are just a few Saturnian keywords. Virgo is the sign of natural and practical living. Virgo is a no-nonsense sign that is very similar in its character to Saturn. The combination of Saturn in Virgo just magnifies each of their respective contributions to life on dear old Mother Earth.
With the world markets suffering trauma after trauma and Obama promising the Moon as they talk about trillions of dollars of indebtedness we know that we are in big trouble. No sense droning on about how bad and scary that it all is. From the starry perspective the energy unfolding is corrective as we realign the monetary game worldwide once again.
Saturn in Virgo reprimands us for our wasteful, polluting and greedy ways. He also imparts deep lessons which lend wisdom and gratefulness to our souls. We will not fall off the planet and we will continue to feed our kids. Which brings us to another serious topic of the Saturn – Virgo combination, health care, especially for the burgeoning elder population and the overall state of affairs regarding our physical and psychological well being.
We are dealing with obesity, heart disease, diabetes cancer and many other debilitating diseases which probably stem from what we have put into our bodies. Now we may wake up to the reality that we need improved diets, minus the chemical additives and every other thing that robs our bodies of nutrition. I think we are going to become part of the wave of back to the land people as we once again learn the often hard lessons of self sufficiency.
Then we have the maverick trouble maker and revolutionary planet Uranus moving through a sign that has no real form but is symbolized by the oceans and seas. As tightly wound and bound as Saturn in Virgo can be, in the opposite direction Uranus moving through Pisces is completely wild and unhinged. Imagine what happens when the town fathers (Saturn / Virgo) and the punk rockers, rappers, bikers and every other fringe element (Uranus / Pisces) meet up. Well it is happening. We have chaos in the streets with 20 shootings in 30 days. We have the Saturnians which represent all aspects of governing such as the police and those that run the show explaining and promising to get it together and spank the bad guys. Fifty years from now the kids will be watching the history channel to see what happened at the turn of the century and they will marvel at the violence, chaos and crudeness of the times. So if things seem a tad out of control it is because they are out of control and like everything else, it will pass.
The full Moon on March 10 is very much aligned with Saturn and Uranus and we will learn more of what this profound planetary combination has to offer. Allow two days either side of the full Moon date as the most impactful days. In essence dear readers, it is time to get ourselves together and ride out this wild weather. We have already embarked on a new journey of discovery as we strive to revolutionize, harmonize and economize our lives. Look at this as one of healing and balancing, not a time of loss but one of gains on a deep spiritual level. No doubt our lives will be enriched.

“The stars incline, they don’t compel” is an age old adage passed around freely in astrological circles. But I must protest, for my experience of nearly forty years of studying astrology has taught me otherwise. The stars compel big time and all of the time. There is never a point when we are not being compelled, moved, affected, attracted, hindered and blessed by the stars, or should I say, by the handwriting of God.
Another take on this material is that whatever comes our way throughout our lives, positive or negative, was created not by the handwriting of God, but penned indeed by the one and only you. No doubt we have spun the web on which we live with our own hands. What appears to be a blow against us may very well be something that saves our lives. We wince and moan under the heavy hand of Saturn when losses and difficulties come up, and we rejoice with the abundance that Jupiter can bring under brighter skies and times. We can react heatedly and sometimes violently when Mars pushes our buttons, and other times we can become the hero as we overcome our fears and limitations. Venus brings elegance, beauty and love our way and when afflicted, may spell the end of a relationship or other similar losses.
A fellow that had just served several years in prison said that it was the best thing that had ever happened to him because it saved his life. Before he was incarcerated he was drinking a half gallon of vodka a day and what appeared to be an unfortunate Saturnian incident turned out to be the blessing that saved his life.

Venus slows down as she prepares to retrograde in Aries on March 6. A planet’s influence becomes very strong during this time when its movement slows, then appears to stop and reverse direction in the night sky. Venus traditionally is the planet associated with love, affection, creativity, beauty and abundance. Now while she retrogrades until mid April you have an opportunity to re-evaluate many aspects of your life. Take some time and weigh up what is most important to you. Then you can start moving in the direction that will bring you peace and happiness.
You might want to keep your horns tucked in a bit as you may be tempted to use them on March 1 and 2. Confusing issues come up and it may take some time to sort out what is real and what is not. Confusion has its cause and costs, all the more reason to take your time. Fireworks of the vocal kind manifest in the workplace. Recently I told a client that is experiencing Saturn in a strong way, of a time when Saturn was passing through my Sun sign Aries. I told her that I don’t remember if I cried more or meditated more in that time period. She wrote back and said the comment gave her a good laugh because she was going through the same thing and realized that she was not alone at all. Often our burdens turn into blessings. On the upside, yes there is an upside, often Virgo people are naturally inclined towards a disciplined life and Saturn’s pinch is not felt as much. If it is, then Virgos just bear down a little more and get the job done.
Your ruling planet Venus presently is backtracking through your opposite sign Aries until March 6. Even then she is moving very slow and will take weeks to get up to speed. It means that you are involved in a time in which a deep inner perusal takes place, or situations happen that cause you to do some deep reflecting on your values and what is truly important in your life. There are all kinds of astrologers out there covering all areas of life. We have natal astrologers, astrological financial advisers, medical and psychological astrologers, spiritual, intuitive, mundane, Vedic and Western, Siderialists and Uranian astrologers just to name a few. The one thing that all of the above stargazers must possess is the ability to interpret what the stars are saying. Without this gift you’re in the wrong profession. In essence, the astrologer creates a dialog between the planets, or at least I do. We study the nature of each planet and how it behaves in different situations. Harmoniously placed beneficial planets obviously will behave in a cordial manner bringing good times and pleasantries. The more difficult or troublesome planets will certainly make their presence known when they are ill placed.
At a biker bar you most likely will run into all kinds of Mars and Pluto types but down the road at the symphony you would likely see Venusian and lunarian types rubbing shoulders. It is unlikely that you will find a sensitive Venus or Mercury type hanging out with the Mars and Pluto testosterone brutes.
Saturnine people who often shape and form our governments and society usually will not be found socializing with loosey goosey loud and aggressive types. Jupitarians generally shine on in their awesome way and we are attracted to their great warmth, generosity and jocularity. You won’t find Jupiterians near the Saturnians as they are at opposite ends of the scale. Jupiter types find the Saturnians a tad oppressive whist the Saturnians find the Jupitarians a little on the goofy or unhinged edge of things. In every family and in every workplace and relationship you will discover the dynamics of why we like some people, totally distrust another, wholly love one person and can hardly tolerate his brother. Yes it’s in the stars.

Okay, on to the next lesson in astrology 101. Just because you are born in any particular sign does not mean that you will have the ruling planet of that sign as the ruler of your chart. Other planets may dominate by being in strong and exalted signs and rising or culminating. I know we have all experienced a time when someone tried to guess our sign and failed miserably at it. Of course, like a dog spying a bone I cannot help myself when I’m around other people for all I see is their signs and planets manifesting through their appearance and behavior. Although the astrologer may have missed picking up on your Sun sign they may very well have been picking up on a dominant planet that you are displaying. On numerous occasions I have met someone and immediately picked up on their date and year of birth and sometimes time of birth as well. On occasion I have done it on the phone just by listening to a person and how they talk. It is a fascinating study that has not been looked into very deeply. Venus and Mars harmonize until the end of the month bringing a rhythmic accord. It is time to beautify, simplify and harmonize your existence. Take stock of everything and weigh up what works and what doesn’t and make the appropriate moves. Life is like that now for Capricorn. Enjoy and treasure what you have because someday it may be gone. It is time to reset your values and remember that all that glitters is not gold.
A big build up of planetary energy is on board as four planets move through Aquarius. It is such a strange time, strained as well.
