We have a busy week ahead, with lots of challenges, hurdles and changes to deal with. Let me break it down for you.
Thursday August 6.
Yesterday’s lunar eclipse will have amped up our emotions in all areas of life, especially in the human welfare department. Today the Moon passes over Jupiter and Neptune in Aquarius bringing strong feelings of euphoria, altruism and spiritual healing. Intuition, visions and dreams become important factors in figuring out life’s concerns.
Friday August 7.
The Pisces Moon enhances our emotional receptivity and sensitivity. People tend to talk about their problems when the Moon is in Pisces, and with the Moon opposing Mercury today the phone lines will be burning, texts and emails flying, twitters tweeting and such right off the map. The Moon, Mercury and Venus harmonize in the evening smoothing things out nicely and enhancing all forms of communications. Plus it’s a Friday evening and all entertainment venues will flourish. It is a night to mix and mingle.
Saturday August 8.
The Pisces Moon squares off with Mars and Saturn changing yesterday’s vibe of “easy come, easy go”, to a time of stop and go in which emotions and frustrations overflow. It might be the night to stay home and avoid the potent volatility, especially if it were to be mixed with alcohol or drugs.
Sunday August 9.
Although Sunday is the traditional day of rest, I doubt that this day will pan out that way. The Moon clicks into Aries early in the afternoon and promptly squares off with Pluto. I can imagine the scenarios that will unfold regarding yesterday’s activities. Secrets are revealed and some of them may be shocking.
Monday August 10.
Mars and Saturn square off today. Mars says go, and Saturn says no. Plus the square aspect creates dynamic tension and just like the tectonic plates pushing up against each other, something has to give. Actually giving and remaining flexible is the key for how to deal with the frustrations and anger that may boil up today. A soft reply garners no wrath, while pushing your way through can cause powerful reactions. Riots, demonstrations and such will be witnessed today.
Tuesday August 11.
A much better day comes our way. The Moon forms a series of positive aspects to the planets creating good will and cooperation. I guess it’s the day to go about healing yesterday’s wounds and setting things right in order to heal. The Moon moves into Taurus late in the evening, which is her exaltation sign bringing a steadying and harmonizing effect.
Wednesday August 12.
The Taurus moon continues throughout the day offering opportunities for all kinds of creative and excellent things to happen. The Moon harmonizes with Venus late in the evening bringing warmth, love and affection our way. Of course we can never get enough love, and it is the only commodity that increases when we give it. So go out and give some love, and then give some more love, and when you cannot give any more, just give a bit more and look for no return.

The Moon visits Aries from August 9 to 11 bringing a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows to deal with. The lows come in the way of frustrations, power trips and changes on August 9 and 10, with much better circumstances on August 11. Lord Mars is square with Saturn throughout these days so take your time and try not to blow a fuse. Of course things will get worked out; hopefully you’re not burned out in the process.

U.S. President Barack Obama is in for some tough days ahead. The full Moon lunar eclipse on August 5 falls right across his Sun line indicating a fateful time for the leader of the free world. The lunar eclipse will affect Obama’s chart for the next six months.
Eclipses are strong karmic indicators and when you’re at the helm of the most powerful nation on the planet we can only imagine the intense and dynamic pressure weighing upon this man. Serious and heavy decisions are made daily with great consequences all the way around. Along with the eclipse cycles we have the planetary transits to consider as well. President Obama has his Mars sitting at 22 degrees of Virgo in his birth chart. Mars is the planet of war and aggression, while Virgo is the sign of analytical deduction and perfection. Mars sits on the cusp of Obama’s eighth house, the house of death and destruction, secrets and planning. Saturn, no friend to Mars, comes along and passes over Obama’s Mars throughout August and early September bringing on a series of very limiting and frustrating circumstances. Transiting Mars and Saturn both affect Mars in Obama’s chart in a way that can only bring more obstruction and frustration in the first two weeks of August.
President Obama is a Leo with Aquarius rising making him congenial, humane, lovable, affable, kind and courteous to one and all. Now the whole world is watching and measuring the strengths and weaknesses of the man and he will be sorely and severely tested in the weeks and months to come. The planet Uranus forms an opposition to Mars in Obama’s chart and it will be at its strength throughout November and December, bringing in the elements of shock and surprise. This means that anything can happen now. Mars – Uranus combinations are likened to nitroglycerin, which we know is highly volatile, explosive and touchy. I am concerned for President Obama’s health and safety. In essence he is walking through a mine field and one lapse in his attention can cause a disaster.
Just about the time that Uranus moves past the exact opposition with Obama’s Mars, he will have to deal with another important solar eclipse which lands on his Saturn in January 2010. Solar eclipses may have an effect that lasts for years in some cases, but certainly at least for one year. The solar eclipse takes place in Obama’s 12th house and this mix of eclipse, Saturn and the 12th house is not a healthy one at all. It represents some type of loss or sacrifice or limited experiences in some way.
Of course, when the fates are riding high we will see this intensity in the charts of others closely connected to this man. Michelle Obama has her Sun degree in the same place as her husband’s Saturn, giving an even stronger message that the times are running heavy for this heavenly couple and for all those that they rule. In my mind they are the modern day King and Queen, and if we think the King Arthur legends were something, we have seen nothing yet. Possibly several hundred years from now children with be reading of this great, wise and wonderful couple that raised the hopes of all oppressed people on the planet. Yes we are running heavy astrological weather and the forecast is cloudy, brooding and sullen. But of course there is a bright silver lining to the dark clouds and soon in the near future we will see where we stand. Karma and astrology are intrinsically interlinked. They go together like hand and glove. Karmas are the most contagious form of invisible diseases to which man has ever been exposed. They are even more galloping, wasting and destructive than the deadliest and most poisonous germs transmitted into the innermost cells of the human system and worm their way most surreptitiously into the blood system. In society, karmas take a firm hold in the shape of a change in view and thought in the so called molders of public opinion. Then they affect the disposition and temper, and afterwards take deep roots in the shape of habits which become “second nature” in man.
To crown all such difficulties, one has to share unwittingly the karmic reactions, even in his own family where he is born and brought up. Thus virtues and vices play an integral role in the formation of culture. In this way, we daily and hourly contract karmas from our surroundings.
The mystics teach us that we have 75% fixed karma and 25% free will. Plus we are free to create better circumstances for the future as we spin the web of destiny by our actions in this life. Every moment in time has its own individual quality and tenor according to the arrangement of the stars. You can create a horoscope for any event such as the birth of a puppy, a person or a nation. Once we have set the birth horoscope we can look at the different planetary cycles that will affect that particular horoscope for any given time in the future. We can also go back to any chosen time period in relation to the birth horoscope. As an example let’s take a look at Canada’s birth horoscope drawn up for July 1, 1867.
The big feature in Canada’s horoscope is the triple conjunction of the Sun, Moon and Uranus in the sign Cancer, and well supported by a strong triangle from Jupiter. It tells of a society that is interested in providing care and protection to her own people and all others that she is able to help. With the revolutionary planet Uranus sitting with the Sun and Moon we can expect that Canadians as a whole are open, friendly, unique, possibly a tad unusual, and certainly tolerant of others lifestyles. We won’t follow all of the rules all of the time, and at times we will not bend to the wishes and demands of other less tolerant folks that would like us to get in line and follow behind. We are leaders in the free world and certainly a showcase for other nations to follow.
Now that Pluto has entered Capricorn and will soon be making a series of oppositions to Canada’s Sun, Moon and Uranus from 2010 to 2015, I thought that we might want to take a look back at other times when Pluto was moving over the Sun, Moon and Uranus in Cancer and see what was happening in our country at that time.
Pluto is symbolized as lord Shiva the destroyer in the Hindu trinity. Pluto brings on great wars, destruction, death and rebirth. Pluto is also associated with power and wealth, thus, the term Plutocrats is a reference to the shakers and movers on the planet. We might want to keep in mind the U.S.A. has the Sun, Venus and Jupiter in Cancer in their national birth chart and will be affected by the Pluto transits as well.
Pluto entered Cancer on May 26, 1914 and on June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian – Hungarian throne was assassinated. This event was the spark that ignited World War 1. Things escalated from there and soon Canada cast her hat into the ring, and we can only imagine the great losses and sacrifices that were endured at that time. The years 1915 and 1916 had to be very tough times for the folks here and for those fighting on foreign shores as Saturn also passed through Cancer at that time, which is another signal of hard work, loss and sacrifice. History tells us that Canada became established and respected on the world scene for its contribution and sacrifices in the war effort.
The battle at Vimy Ridge in April 1917 came while Canada had Saturn and Pluto moving through its sign. While the men filled the trenches our women carried on another fight and won the right to vote in September 1917. The years 1918 to 1920 are also very tremendous in our country’s growth and development. In 1921 another huge event took place of a plutonian nature with the discovery of insulin. Pluto rules death and regeneration and is symbolized by a phoenix who out of his own ashes creates a new form. The discovery of insulin has saved countless lives and has given innumerable diabetics the opportunity to live normal lives. Pluto was passing over the Sun in Canada’s chart when insulin was discovered by the two Canadian researchers, Dr. Frederick Grant Banting and Charles Best, and as we know, the rest is history.
We can expect pretty much the same type of energy to manifest from 2010 to 2015 as our Country goes through another great cycle of dying and rebirthing, death and renewal. It does not have to be as grim as the energy nearly one hundred years ago, but we do have our work cut out for us as we wage war with poverty, addiction, corruption, homelessness and the other myriad concerns and problems that are on the cosmic karmic platter. The King is dead.
I’m writing this column on July 7 as I watch the memorial services for Michael Jackson. Eclipses have always been associated with the death of powerful Kings. I’m pretty sure that the folks that organized Michael’s Memorial did not know of the full Moon lunar eclipse that takes place on this day. A full Moon in itself is powerful and impactful. All the more so if the full Moon happens to be an eclipse. The tears are flowing and the hearts are swollen as we say goodbye to a cosmic, complex, exceptionally gifted human being as he heads upwards to the finer, lighter and brighter worlds above.
Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, the day of a full Moon. His Moon is in Pisces which is the sign most related to music and especially dance. His Pisces Moon would also make him an exceptionally sensitive human being with a great sense of love and compassion.
The Sun and Pluto were conjunct in Virgo giving him the ability to go into things on a very deep level. His devotion and dedication to perfection is notable. This conjunction also brought him great wealth and great power along with a messianic and mesmeric magnetism that ignited the imaginations of millions of people all over the world. Gemini was rising in the east giving him his sleek, mercurial appearance along with the balance and agility that was hard to match.
Presently there is great speculation as to what caused his death. I have studied his western and eastern (Vedic) charts and in their respective ways they point to a most difficult and trying time in this man’s life. Saturn the planet associated with loss, illness and death was opposite to Michael’s Moon at the time of his departure. Saturn is the lord of his eighth house which is the traditional house of death.
In Vedic Astrology we have planetary time cycles called Dasa’s and Bhukti’s. Michael was running the dasa of Ketu and Bhukti of Rahu. Rahu and Ketu are the north and south nodes of the Moon and the eclipse cycles are related to the nodes and the eclipses represent karma on a collective and individual level.
James Braha, a brilliant Vedic astrologer comments on the dasa of Ketu, in his book Ancient Hindu Astrology for the Modern Western Astrologer. He says, “Out of all the planetary periods that of Ketu is perhaps the most difficult to accurately predict. Ancient Hindu scriptures describe all sorts of miseries, such as poverty, sorrow, humiliation, slanders, poisoning, strange illnesses etc”. Michael has Rahu and Ketu in the 6th and 12th houses of his chart, known as the houses of loss and illness. The stars don’t lie, and they do show the karmic situation collectively and individually for all souls. He had his burdens, faults, failures and weaknesses, but we loved him anyway because deep in his heart he was about love, freedom and happiness. Last week we talked about the importance of the Saturn return. Saturn takes just over 29 years to travel around the Sun. He rules such things as fear, old age, death, poverty, pestilence and disease. He is considered a first class malefic energy in Vedic Astrology. When he does come knocking most people become very uncomfortable and nervous.
Iran is going through its first Saturn return based on the chart drawn for the Iranian revolution in April 1979, indicating a time of great unrest and insecurity. North Korea was established on September 9, 1948. North Korea has just completed its second Saturn return in September 2007. Now Saturn is sitting very close to the Sun in this country’s birth chart and it is pretty much like the Saturn return. Again, Saturn brings up our insecurities and no doubt, brings on much consternation, vexation, limitation, poverty and isolation. The Sun represents one’s ego and sense of self. When Saturn pays his visit we have to contend with feelings of isolation, limitation, inadequacy and failure. It is interesting to note that the U.S. and Russia both have Sun, Saturn afflictions in their horoscopes. This lends to the “my gun is bigger than your gun” posturing that never seems to end.
Pluto is moving opposite to Uranus in the North Korean birth chart indicating a time of possible revolution, great disruption, war and all of the hideous things that manifest when these two planets mix it up. Nuclear war is more of a threat now than at any other time, especially on the Korean Peninsula. The tension in the region will escalate dynamically and dramatically throughout the summer and fall. Mars the planetary warlord enters Leo mid October 2009 and promptly heads for a conjunction with Pluto in North Korea’s chart. Mars moves slowly over Pluto and then backs up over him again throughout November and December 2009 and January 2010 bringing up a very dangerous time indeed. These two planets are the strongest representatives of violence, destruction, war and aggression. Mars continues to back up (retrograde) and becomes stationary again in March 2010 and he sits very close to Pluto in North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il’s horoscope. Mars is in square aspect with Mars in the North Korean chart all through this time period indicating a time of frustration, anger and military action.
Although this material has already got my head spinning, it is backed up by a major solar eclipse that takes place on January 15, 2010 smack on the position of Saturn in U.S. President, Barack Obama’s horoscope and directly on Michelle Obama’s Sun position. It tells of a fateful time for all concerned and it is highly likely that the bluffs and threats of the past may materialize into the real thing. The eclipse signals a very troubling time ahead, for the forces of light and darkness will continue and escalate their particular agendas just as it has always been. It does not have to be this way and much depends on how the players on the world stage handle the upcoming serious and heavy aspects.
On a positive note, Saturn is a grand and great teacher whose true interest is helping people and countries to live and exist in moderate, healthy and peaceful way. He is a stern task master though, and his lessons are harsh and costly and sometimes on this crazy planet it is the price that we must pay in order to survive as a species.

One of the most important planetary cycles in astrology is called the Saturn return. Saturn takes approximately 29 years to complete its cycle around the Sun. Once we hit the age of 29 we can consider ourselves to be true adults as Saturn has made a full trip around the sun and is in the same position as it was when we were born.
Saturn is one of the planetary heavies and he is known to dish out serious discipline, hardship and struggles in accordance to our individual karma. Check the divorce statistics and you will see a pretty high proportion of people in the 28 to 30 year old bracket. If you are happy with your life and have stayed true to yourself, then you will feel psychologically balanced and more than ready to head into your thirties. Conversely if you are not happy with your life and have not made the appropriate changes when you should have, when the Saturn return comes up you may find yourself in that bracket, applying for a divorce and dealing with all kinds of concerns that need correction and attention. Sobering no doubt, but that is what it is about.
Nations as well as individuals go through their planetary cycles. Iran presently is experiencing its first Saturn return, according to the horoscope set for the Iranian Revolution that took place in 1979. Now Iran must sort out its problems and concerns from within. That which is not worthy or healthy must be addressed and changed in order to bring about a healthy and productive state of affairs. The present day problems will not go away or diminish at all. If anything, they will increase. A miracle is taking place and the spirit of the Iranian youth is enlivened, quickened. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s horoscope is indicating a very fateful time for him. Saturn was opposite to his Mars on June 12 indicating limitation, frustration and danger. After studying the horoscopes of the leaders of Iran it does look like the troubles have just begun. In recent articles I have talked about the Jupiter – Neptune conjunction taking place these days and it is one that can awaken the vision and spirit of a people as they cry out for fairness, freedom and justice. This particular conjunction occurs at 26 degrees of Aquarius which happens to be the exact position of former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani’s natal Sun. He may hold the keys to the future. He has the chart of a visionary and he may know the way to go, in the best interest of the people.
The spiritual leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has a birth chart showing a time of great debate, frustration and confrontation that will be at full force throughout 2009 and especially February, March and April 2010. This is when he will experience some of the greatest challenges of his life. The planetary aspects occurring now are stronger and more dynamic than those that took place in April of 1979, telling us that we may witness a revolution in Iran.

The summer solstice arrives on June 20 at 10:46 P.M. PDT. The position and condition of the planets at the time of the solstice can offer many hints as to how the next three months will unfold. As the Sun commences his journey through the cardinal water sign Cancer we can expect life’s energies and rhythms to pick up considerably.
The Sun opposes Pluto on June 23 bringing important developments on the international scene. The bolstering, strutting and posturing of those striving to hold on to power will be at an all time high and could become quite dangerous. Overthrows and struggles for power will take place at the cost of many lives. I guess we shouldn’t be too alarmed as this seems to be the natural order of things on dear old planet Earth.
Venus Mars and Saturn form a nice triangle bringing a strong and balanced co-operative effort in all areas of life. The bean counters and other social prognosticators can say what they want, but I sense that the economy is moving along and we are going to carry on just as we always do. The conjunction is another harbinger of good things to come and will prove the human spirit to be alive and well and more than willing to strive onwards towards the goal of free and fair living for all members and species on the planet.

We are very fortunate in the sense that we have so much information at our fingertips. Imagine, all we have to do is fire up our computer, load our favorite astrology program, plunk our birth information in and within seconds we have our birth horoscope before our eyes. In ancient times astrology was reserved for Kings and Emperors. Their horoscopes reflected the fate of the Nation, for it was believed that whatever happened to the King happened to the people as well.
Possibly we can foretell our fate by taking a look at some of our illustrious leaders. Potentially there are many competent people that are more than capable of running the show. Of course, fate and timing come into play. If a leader has a series of heavy aspects unfolding in his/her chart while in power, it is unlikely that they will achieve much success, and may be dogged by the economy, the opposition and myriad other roadblocks. They walk away tattered, flustered and wondering what in the heck happened to them.
I have a book titled “Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra”. It’s the gospel of Hindu astrology, the book of books on Vedic or Eastern astrology. The ancient sage Parasara divined many of the astrological concepts now in use throughout the world today. What he divined several thousand years ago can be used directly today when applied to our birth charts. The following two paragraphs are from Parasara’s work.
Effects like success all around, well being in the family, gain of conveyances, ornaments and clothes, by the beneficence of the King (government), reverence, devotion to deities and the preceptor, association with men of learning, happiness from wife and children etc, will be derived in the antardasa (planetary cycle) of Jupiter in the Dasa (main planetary cycle) of Saturn if Jupiter be in an angle.
There will be opulence and glory, happiness to wife, gains through the King (Government), comforts of good food and clothes, religious mindedness, name and fame in the Country, if Jupiter by in the Fifth house from the Lord of the Dasa (Planetary cycle) Saturn.
Imagine before an election that we could use this information while choosing our leaders. The above two planetary cycles from Parasara’s work apply to British Columbia’s Premier, Gordon Campbell’s birth chart. He is the Man for the times. I’m not even interested in politics, but am very interested in what makes people tick.
Premier Campbell is a Capricorn with Virgo rising and he will work hard, dedicatedly so in order to meet the standards that are demanded of him. The stars are telling of a time in which he will do well. He fits the Saturnine mold that has formed him in this life. He seems a bit distant and a tad cold which are pure Saturnine traits. He does have the Moon and Venus in Aquarius which again may hinder public perception regarding emotional interactions, but beneath the façade there may very well be a caring and loving individual. Uranus is at the top of his chart indicating an innovative individual and along with his Aquarius planets he will have his eye on the big picture. There are some shocks and surprises coming up and a few nasty secrets may come flying out of Pandora’s box. Some will jump ship and go against him, but at the end of the day he will count his successes.

The Sun, Moon and Saturn form a T square on June 7, at full Moon time.
